8 Sight Word Center Ideas

Hello Sight Word Fun

Well ladies and gents, I know I said I would give you a free center for everyday until my unit was finished and then I was missing for almost a week.  It was for good reason I promise.  I was on vacay with my family at DISNEY and it was AWESOME!

Now I owe you some freebies...I have 8 fun sight word freebies for you, one for each day I missed.  The direction cards for all of them will be at the end of this post.

First up is called Word UP.  This is a fun little center that I have used for a while but I used to use shoe strings until I saw this pinterest post {GENIUS!} and then started using pipe cleaners too.  Gather the supplies {letter beads, container, and pipe cleaners cut into fourths}, print and laminate the direction card, and put sight words cards in a center.  Students will choose a card and build the word using the letter beads.  Get your own direction card at the end of this post.

Next up is a activity called Bird Words.  It is a fun little way for students to practice reading their words.  Kiddos will get a stuffed animal and read all of the words in their box to their stuffed animal as fast as they can.  They are working on sight word fluency here.  I chose a yellow bird in following with my Rocket and Yellow Bird theme.  Get your own direction card at the end of this post.

This next one is a super easy to set up center and you probably have the supplies already in your teacher closet.  All you need are some bulletin board letters.  I punched out 2 of each letter and 5 of each vowel and then laminated them all.  Students find the letters needed to make the word they chose and lay the letters on the floor or desk to spell out the word.  Get your own direction card at the end of this post.

The fourth center for today is a class FA.VOR.ITE.  I mean the kids LOVE this center, beg for this center.  It is called Pen-Click & Write.  The best part, it is super easy to throw in a center and hardly takes any space to store when not in use.  For this center, I got 4 of these pens from Wal*mart.  Students will get a set of sight word cards, a piece of paper, and a pen.  Students will select a word card and click the pen to any color of their choice.  They write the word, then click to the next color and write the same word.  They will write each word 4 times in 4 different colors.  Once they have written the word 4 times, they will get a new sight word card and do it again.  If they run out of words or get tired of the activity, they can turn the paper over and write a silly story using the words they wrote on the other side.  Get your own direction card at the end of this post.
Here is another oldie but goodie.  Students will work on reading, writing, and stamping their sight words in a center cleverly called Read/Write/Stamp.  Exciting, I know!  Copy the recording sheet front and back, place a set of sight word cards, pencils, and a box of stamps at the center and allow students to work.  Get your own direction card and recording sheet at the end of this post.

This next one is another super easy to set up center, and again, you probably have the supplies already in your teacher closet.  All you need is some construction paper and chalk.  I purchased my chalk around Easter time and was able to find “egg” chalk which worked perfectly for my bird theme but in all honesty, any chalk will do.  Students will get a word card, piece of paper, and a piece of chalk.  They will write their sight words all over the paper.  Get your own direction card at the end of this post.

In sticking with my bird theme, I call this next one “Bird Word Nest”.  I wrote sight words on the craft sticks with notches in them.  I found them at Wal*mart.  They call them “Wooden Skill Sticks”.  I tell my students that they are going to build a bird word nest.  To play, students pick a word stick and then read it out loud to their partner.  If they read the word correctly, they add it to the nest.  If they do not read it correctly, they have to put it in a pile next to him/her.  The person with the least amount of sticks in their pile wins.  Get your own direction card at the end of this post.

This last center for today is also a class favorite but sad news, I forgot to take a picture.  Anyway, I still wanted to share it with you.  It is called Sailboat Sight Words.   Students get a sight word card and write the whole word on the boat.  Then they will write the word on the sail adding one letter at a time.  Get your own direction card at the end of this post.

Happy center time,
Coconut Cutie
